EHPEA Code of Practice for Sustainable Flower Production
Introduction
The EHPEA Code was designed and introduced to guide the sustainable development of the Flower and Cuttings export sector in Ethiopia and to provide a tool for monitoring and communication progress and standard achieved.
Many farms and stakeholders representing the various Government Ministries, (MOARD, MOLSA, EPA, MOH & MOTI), the ILO, Confederation of Ethiopian Trade unions and Civil Society were involved in the development process which was guided by Myrtille Danse from Wageningen University, Netherlands. During development consideration was given to the current status and needs of the farms, relevant Law in Ethiopia and the key concerns of international buyers and civil society in Ethiopia with particular reference to protection of the environment, implementation of good agricultural practices and provision of acceptable employment conditions for farm employees.

Implementation
Since the launch of the Code EHPEA has been proactive in helping farms to meet the requirements of the Code. A training team comprising one experienced expatriate coordinator, Dr Glenn Humphries and six Ethiopian graduates was established at the Association and training courses relevant to the Code requirements were developed. Training for the farms is now provided by the team and in cooperating with stakeholders, in the following topics:

The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) was established in September 2002 to represent the interests of its members and promote the expansion of the emerging horticulture export sector in Ethiopia.
